Scary Second Year | University ❤
Hello m'lovelies.
I'm well into my second year now (a month to be exact haha) and I'm loving it. I love my course which is fantastic, however this year is really scaring me. There's a lot I have to do that I don't feel ready for. I've been spoken to multiple time about how important it is to get work experience through voluntary placements. "Get as many placements as you can" they say without recognising that I actually do need time to do my degree.
Then they'll say "make sure you get a steady part-time job so that you can show commitment". What?
I mean, yes, I need a job for money and things but at this point I was starting to worry about time management. Then a realisation dawned on me- I need to go to lectures, read about a million books, have a part time job, find voluntary placements, actually learn the stuff for my exams, work out, write essays, conduct interviews and write about it all in a portfolio.
I also kinda need to live.
So this year is kind of difficult already. But, this year I'm more determined than ever to do well and do everything that I can by volunteering for things and hopefully it will all work out well.
So, as you can probably tell- posting every week is becoming a bit of a challenge. I'll post as much as I can, but if I don't please do excuse me :P
I've got a post coming up on organising my time so look out for that if you're interested!

How To Get A Student Job | Life ❤
So, you're a student. As poor as the next man, trying to survive whilst having a good time. 2nd year may have hit you and you're thinking to yourself- man I need a job. That was me last week. Now I've had two job offers and I get to pick which one is more suited for me. Great stuff! It's not that hard! I mean, when I was thinking about it- all I did was stress and think "oh my god what if I don't get a job and I'm poor forever"- but turns out all I had to do was a few simple strategies that will help create great first impressions. Now I know this sounds a bit like I'm bragging, but honestly I really just want to help those who were just as worried as me a few weeks ago.
Get In There Early
This is kind of a big tip. Before everyone gets there on freshers week, arrive early to hand out your CV's or send some emails/apply online/make some phone calls to companies. In my case I arrived back to Aberystwyth early. I made a note of the places who had part-time work advertised online and in their shop windows and applied for those places before everyone arrived. I think employers are thankful to know that their workers are keen. Also, say you're not really sure how to go about it, your University will probably have an office or something totally dedicated to student jobs so check that out!
Write A Great Student CV
It doesn't mean that your CV has to be as brilliant as say Shakespeare's CV- but just really think about what you're writing. Don't make it a rush job. For me I made a huge emphasis on how I'm great with flexible hours, willing to work weekends and have a lot of experience. If you don't have any past experience in a work place maybe consider any experience in volunteer work. Basically any experience is good. Just sort of word it to suit the employer and then there should be no reason why they wouldn't love you already!
First Impressions Count
When handing out your CV, dress smart-casual. Don't overdo it and don't under-do it. It's basically just a way of creating a good first impression to your employer. Smile, be confident and don't be nervous. They'll already know just by seeing you if they'd even want to read your CV in the first place- so make it count! Also- be polite!!!
Interviews/Trials
So you've made it this far and now you're crapping 'em. They'll probably give you a few days to get ready for it so don't worry about that. When receiving the phone call to tell you about the interview make a not of the place, the time, the dress code etc so you don't screw the easy stuff up (top tip right there haha). Make sure you dress professionally and understand exactly what the interview/trial entails. I made this mistake in my last interview which I mistook for an induction. I dressed way to casually and hadn't prepared for any interview questions. Embarrassingly, I had to take my future employer aside and explain why I was wearing an old jumper, leggings and ugg boots. Luckily my interview skills weren't too shabby and I managed to squeeze myself into the job haha. So yeah, just watch out for that.
The main this is to be yourself, show off the student pros rather than the student cons and smile. Nobody wants to employ a grumpy person. Give it your absolute best and you will succeed!

How To Budget In University | Life ❤
Whether you're off to University for your first year or you've never quite got the hang of budgeting, I thought I'd do a quick post on how I budgeted last year and how it will be different for me this year. Ok, I won't be sharing with you all about how much money I'm entitled to but hopefully the structure of how I budget will be more beneficial anyway.
1. First of all find out how much maintenance money in total you will have per term (loan and grant).
2. Then find out how much rent you'll pay per term.I'll be paying my rent monthly, so I just add the rent up for September, October, November and December. So for arguments sake lets just say you have £1500 per term (loan and grant) and your rent per term is £800 (£200 a month).
3. Then take the rent away from your total. So £1500-£800= £700.
4. Then divide what is left by 4 (to see how much money you have left per month for September, October, November and December). So e.g. £700/4= £175 per month left over.
5. At this point you want to subtract any subscriptions/bills you pay for monthly so if you have spotify, a mobile phone bill or Netflix this is where you take that out.
So again e.g. every month £4.95 for spotify (with NUS Extra) and £20 for bills. £175-£24.95= £150.05 left a month.
6. Then you divide what's left by 4 again (4 weeks in every month) so £150.05/4= £37.51
Then that is how much money you would have left for food, going out etc.
So then obviously it's up to you how much you spend on food and how you spend your money but that's quite an easy structure to follow termly to budget your money. However if you feel like you don't have enough money to live on, it may be time to get a job. Which sucks. Just keep in mind when you're out shopping or whatever, keep asking yourself "Do I really need this?".
I hope this post wasn't boring and I really do hope I've helped a few people stuck with their budgeting.

5 Things You'll Need For Fresher's Week | Life ❤
1. White T-shirt
Pretty standard. You are bound to have a night out where you'll all wear white t-shirts and come home covered in permanent marker but it's always fun and a nice piece to keep :)
2. Alcohol
There is absolutely no doubt that you will need alcohol in freshers week. If you've read my previous post I've explained why it's good to stock up before hand, but it would also be fun to buy shots with your new flatmates and play drinking games!
3. Packet Food
It is also totally inevitable that you'll be hungover and lazy so easy packet food is the way to go. It doesn't mean you can't be healthy- low fat super noodles and pasta n sauce without milk are both pretty ok!
4. Medicine
To follow on the hangover route- you may or may not experience fresher flu. It is always best to be prepared with painkillers and all sorts just in case you fall ill, because when fresher's flu hits, it hits hard.
5. A Pack of Cards
And last but not least, a pack of cards is always handy to have at university. They make excellent drinking games or just sort of mid-week poker nights. They'll be great fun and a good way to interact with your new flatmates.
Hope these were all helpful and if you'd like to see more university posts/videos then please comment down below.
Thanks for reading!

My Fresher Advice | Life ❤
1. Get Netflix
It's first on the list because for me it was pretty important. A lot of time spent in uni revolved around Netflix and which films we were all going to watch. It was also a god send to have when you wake up hungover on a Sunday morning and all you can do really is just about switch your laptop on to watch an episode of Modern Family.
2. Music is a big responsibility
Especially in pre-drinks. Don't worry about it too much though, just remember that if you are in control of the music you are also in control of everyone else's mood before you go out. So just don't play You Raise Me Up before heading out and you'll be fine.
3. Don't be selfish
Don't make it all about you, remember now that you live with other people and you need to take into consideration the things they want to do etc. Also if you bake a cake, don't eat it all yourself- share it! You'll probably make friends really quickly...
4. Stock up on booze
Before you go, look out for deals on alcohol and buy them before freshers week. Obviously this doesn't just apply to alcohol, but it will probably work out better (money wise) so you can spend your student loan on other things!
5. Don't stress too much
You will make friends- I promise! I know everyone says this but honestly, if it's not your flatmates it's people on your course. If it's not people on your course it's people you meet on nights out. And don't worry about the work load too much in first year, as long as you pass then you'll get into second year!
6. Don't leave things until the last minute
Don't however, leave essays until the night before because that will stress you out. Because at the end of the day you do actually need to pass. Just start early, take your time to think about it and approach it in a calm, chilled, "I have loads of time to handle it" kind of way.
7. First impressions and expectations are not always met
Don't expect things. Don't judge people because you're probably wrong. Just let things play out the way their supposed to. I expected to be best friends with all my flatmates forever. Turns out we didn't get on and I ended up moving out and meeting new people who are just absolutely brilliant. Expect the unexpected I guess.
8. Join societies
Basically because you'll get to go out more and you'll meet loads of new people all interested in the same things as you. I sadly didn't join any in my first year and I really do feel like I've missed out but this year I'm planning on joining the Psychology society and maybe a performing club :)
9. Don't take other people's stuff
A pretty standard rule but you hear about it a lot in university. People eating other people's food without asking and using things that aren't theirs. I mean it's stealing and not cool so don't do it because people will not like you.
10. Let yourself go
Go do all the crazy stuff you want to do and really be yourself. This is a new fresh start for you to try new things and meet new people. Don't let it go to waste and make the new experience the best few years of your life.
Hope this helped all of you freshers!

University Year One! | Life ❤
The University
Aberystwyth is an absolutely beautiful place (well I think so anyway). It's a great student based town where everything is pretty much in one place which is great because I'm lazy. However, there is one downfall: there's ono greggs, topshop, zara or river island. Bummer. But that's what online shopping is for right? Being by the seaside is lush, it's really quite calming. I haven't even set foot on the beach yet though haha. Whilst it's calming the nightlife is surprising, it's actually really good. The university is on a massive hill which I don't walk up much due to my previously stated laziness, but the uni is very diverse and lively, everyone is friendly and helpful (aaaaand, whilst the student union is small they do good food haha).
The Course
At the start of the year I had a little trouble with my course. Basically I changed courses 4 times which I doubt any of the staff were happy about. Now I'm studying full time BSc Psychology and I'm really enjoying it. I don't like doing any of the work (well because it's work) but I find it very very interesting and then the work doesn't really become so much of a chore. I actually enjoyed writing a few of my essays... The course covers things I want to learn which is great since I'm paying a lot of money for it but I am a bit gutted I can't pick any modules until 3rd year but I suppose in Psychology there must be a set amount of material you need to cover. Pretty much all the staff are lovely and helpful (some more than others) but I can't complain! I'm finding the biology side of it quite hard, but I'm working on it!
The Accommodation
So. Many. Issues.
The beginning of the year for me was really really tough. On first arrival I really liked my room. But then I didn't really get on with everyone in my flat (and I felt massively homesick). I wasn't enjoying myself and found myself stressing out, panicking and crying A LOT. I decided to move in with my boyfriend and some friends. It completely changed my university experience. I felt so much happier and I got to meet some amazing new people. I am so so soooo grateful that they let me stay, it was that sole decision that made my first year completely amazing.
The Money
Managing money is harder than I thought it would be. I started working part time at Uni, but the manager would make me work Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday morning and Monday night. So basically I had no weekend when my friends were going out. So, I quit. This made managing my money a bit harder but it wasn't terrible. I always had money to buy food and go out. Just sometimes I found I couldn't buy things I wanted (new clothes etc) and I still haven't fixed my phone screen- maybe one day when I have enough cash tucked away.

The Life
I love the lifestyle of Aberystwyth. It's busy enough to never be boring but it's not sooo busy that you run out of money or you feel totally overwhelmed. Everything is just in one place so it's so easy. I've loved being a student this year. I'm independent now which is pretty cool. I can decide to do whatever I want when I want (to an extent haha). It's actually been good for me too- learning how to cook and stuff. I've met so many great people who have just made this year fantastic, they are all so lovely and I'm so pleased to have met them. This year has been one of the greatest years of my life. Can't wait for next year!
