1. White T-shirt

Pretty standard. You are bound to have a night out where you'll all wear white t-shirts and come home covered in permanent marker but it's always fun and a nice piece to keep :)

 

2. Alcohol

There is absolutely no doubt that you will need alcohol in freshers week.  If you've read my previous post I've explained why it's good to stock up before hand, but it would also be fun to buy shots with your new flatmates and play drinking games!

 

3. Packet Food

It is also totally inevitable that you'll be hungover and lazy so easy packet food is the way to go. It doesn't mean you can't be healthy- low fat super noodles and pasta n sauce without milk are both pretty ok!

 

4. Medicine

To follow on the hangover route- you may or may not experience fresher flu. It is always best to be prepared with painkillers and all sorts just in case you fall ill, because when fresher's flu hits, it hits hard.

 

5. A Pack of Cards

And last but not least, a pack of cards is always handy to have at university. They make excellent drinking games or just sort of mid-week poker nights. They'll be great fun and a good way to interact with your new flatmates.

1. Get Netflix

It's first on the list because for me it was pretty important. A lot of time spent in uni revolved around Netflix and which films we were all going to watch. It was also a god send to have when you wake up hungover on a Sunday morning and all you can do really is just about switch your laptop on to watch an episode of Modern Family.

 

2. Music is a big responsibility

Especially in pre-drinks. Don't worry about it too much though, just remember that if you are in control of the music you are also in control of everyone else's mood before you go out. So just don't play You Raise Me Up before heading out and you'll be fine.

 

3. Don't be selfish

Don't make it all about you, remember now that you live with other people and you need to take into consideration the things they want to do etc. Also if you bake a cake, don't eat it all yourself- share it! You'll probably make friends really quickly...

 

4. Stock up on booze

Before you go, look out for deals on alcohol and buy them before freshers week. Obviously this doesn't just apply to alcohol, but it will probably work out better (money wise) so you can spend your student loan on other things!

 

5. Don't stress too much

You will make friends- I promise! I know everyone says this but honestly, if it's not your flatmates it's people on your course. If it's not people on your course it's people you meet on nights out. And don't worry about the work load too much in first year, as long as you pass then you'll get into second year!

 

6. Don't leave things until the last minute

Don't however, leave essays until the night before because that will stress you out. Because at the end of the day you do actually need to pass. Just start early, take your time to think about it and approach it in a calm, chilled, "I have loads of time to handle it" kind of way.

 

7. First impressions and expectations are not always met

Don't expect things. Don't judge people because you're probably wrong. Just let things play out the way their supposed to. I expected to be best friends with all my flatmates forever. Turns out we didn't get on and I ended up moving out and meeting new people who are just absolutely brilliant. Expect the unexpected I guess.

 

8. Join societies

Basically because you'll get to go out more and you'll meet loads of new people all interested in the same things as you. I sadly didn't join any in my first year and I really do feel like I've missed out but this year I'm planning on joining the Psychology society and maybe a performing club :)

 

9. Don't take other people's stuff

A pretty standard rule but you hear about it a lot in university. People eating other people's food without asking and using things that aren't theirs. I mean it's stealing and not cool so don't do it because people will not like you.

 

10. Let yourself go

Go do all the crazy stuff you want to do and really be yourself. This is a new fresh start for you to try new things and meet new people. Don't let it go to waste and make the new experience the best few years of your life.

Tip No. 1: Prep before you go out.
I would seriously advise putting your pyjamas out ready, pouring yourself a glass of water and getting the paracetamol out ready by the side of your bed (along with some make up wipes) this way, when your being carried into your room singing 'Sweet Caroline' life is just that bit easier. Also, eat something full of carbs before you go, patsa, bread etc. to line your stomach, meaning less vom and more party time. If you don't want to spend money when you're out on a kebab smothered in garlic sauce, make yourself food before you go and leave it out to have when you get back!
Tip No. 2: Know your limit.
Not everyone's limit is the same. You may be trying to 'catch up' with fellow smashed companions, but if your more of a 'lightweight' just be wary. Drinking more than your capable of is really really bad for you. I say this as if I've never done it, but I've actually been caught out quite a few times now. You think to yourself "Oh, I'm not drunk, everyone else is downing death stars, I should too..." but in reality, you're falling over and telling strangers you love them.
Tip No. 3: Drink water.
Drink a pint of water before you go, twice through the night and one when you get back *y'know, the one you already prepared for yourself ;)*. Think of it this way: you're going to be unwell, when you're unwell you are always told to drink water. Water is good for you and helps to ease the hangover in the morning.
Tip No.4: Get up.
This is probably the most difficult tip to follow. Your warm, cosy and comfortable under your covers, yet your head is pounding, and you feel like you're going to spew all over your duvet. Get up! Get out of bed and walk around. Have another glass of water if you need to. Sometimes staying in bed isn't the best thing to do. I find when I walk around a bit, I feel more like a human being and less lying a dying sloth.
Tip No.5: Paracetamol is your best friend.
Seriously. Wang two of these bad boys down your neck. It will do the world of good. Hopefully your headache will go away and you'll feel more 'well' than when you were shielding yourself from the world under the covers.
Tip No.6: Eat something.
Some people get the munchies, and some people have no appetite at all, but you need to eat and drink! Drink lots of water throughout the day, and do not drink more alcohol, realistically it's not doing your body any good. If you don't really fancy drinking more water, drink fruit juice, it's great to have some vitamins floating around in your bloodstream. Also, eat a banana. If you don't like bananas, then eat something high in potassium. When you've had a lot to drink, your potassium levels lower and so you need more ingested into your body. Also, eggs are great for hangovers.
Tip No. 7: Go outside!
Rain, snow,wind or shine- go outside. Getting some fresh air in your lungs makes you feel fresh and revived. Just pop down the shop to get some coffee or stand outside in the garden for a bit. It makes your body feel cleaner, and less congested.
Tip No. 8: Look after yourself.
One of the best things to do is have a shower. Really scrub your face, hair and body until you're squeaky clean. When you get out of the shower, you feel almost as if you've washed the hangover away. A shower, and some de-puffing eye masks will make you look and feel way way waaaaay better.
